Adjacent to the historic Norton Arms pub which dates back to 1758, it was previously owned by Greenall’s Brewery and used as a football field.
In 1997, Greenall’s intended to sell the field with planning permission to build on it.
Local residents objected to this and formed a charitable Trust that ultimately acquired the land as a Millennium Green, thus preserving it as a green space for posterity. It is one of the few remaining Millennium Greens in the UK as many were sold over the years due to lack of local interest/support.
In 2012, as part of the Diamond Jublilee and Olympics celebrations, we became a “Queen Elizabeth 11 Field” giving us further protection as a green space, and a wonderful plaque!
Local people use the Green for dog walking, football and general recreation. It is open to the public 24/7 all year around
